Battle of Badr

The plain of Badr is about 20 miles to the south west of Madinah. At dawn on 17th March 624 (CE), the army of the Quraysh sallied forth to do battle against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Muhammad promised his men that those who fought valiantly and died were assured of a place that same day in Paradise. When the battle was joined, it was soon evident that the Muslims strong in their faith, had a unity, a discipline and a commitment which their enemy lacked. It is believed that the followers of Muhammad were aided in the battle by a host of angels, led by Gabriel, and that, wherever the angels past, they struck terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Amongst the Muslim warriors none earned greater distinction than Hamzah bin Abd al-Muttalib for his courage and his strength. Before long, the army of the Quraysh, though great in number, had been utterly routed. About fifty Qurayshi men were killed or received wounds from which they later died. Abu Jahl, Muhammad's implacable enemy, who fought longer and more fiercely than most of the Quraysh, was wounded and fell on the battlefield. The battle of Badr over, the Muslims dug a large communal grave and buried the Qurayshi dead. The faithful were jubilant for the victory which they had been promised had, against all the odds, come to pass.
