Stumbling and scrambling in Jamarat area lead to pilgrims' death and injuries

Mina, Saudi Arabia, 12 Jan 06

The Official Security Spokesman of the Ministry of Interior Major General Eng. Mansour bin Sultan Al-Turki stated that stumbling and scrambling among pilgrims at the entrance of the eastern Jamarat (Stoning) Bridge here today led to the death and injury of a number of pilgrims.

He pointed out that the fall of a large volume of mobile luggage carried by pilgrims, the insistence of a large number of pilgrims tocast their stones at noon and their haste to perform the stoning rituals led to the incident.

Security forces had quickly started to control the situation. They had cordoned off the area to rescue and provide aid for pilgrims who fell in the site. Rescue works are still underway and a further statement will be issued later, the spokesman said.
